WACOL, HUMAN RIGHTS AND DEMOCRATIC CONSOLIDATION
IN NIGERIA.
In an emerging democracy / transitional state such as Nigeria, strict
compartmentalization or discrimination in the work of a Civil Society
Organisation such as WACOL is a difficult task. This is made all the more
so because the level of illiteracy is high, political awareness is low
and the rate of human right abuse is high, with a lot of the later appearing
as deeply rooted cultural and traditional practices. Besides, a culture
of civil society activity is only beginning to emerge in Nigeria. Institutional/
infrastructural collapse leading to limited delivery on the so called
democracy dividend continued to increase the pressure and tension in the
polity. This is the nature of the environment in which WACOL has worked
tenaciously since inception to positively impact on the life of the citizenry.
It is understandable, therefore, that the challenge has been enormous
in our core areas of competence including Gender, Democracy and Governance,
Human Rights, Reproductive Health Rights and Conflict Resolution.
